Good evening I have several of these Washington stamps now, and have been avoiding typing them. It seems so complicated from the readings of the posts. Okay they both are perforated~15, type ll?, now one has paper that looks different than the other. Im doubting a grill is what I'm saying, but I dont know. I am not familiar with grills. Then, the other stamp seems more toned & with gum I believe. Thats one question, should it be tested for a grill even though gum may be present? I am not familiar with the older stamps of yet, just getting started with earlier types. Also the colors appear different to me. As always, any ideas are absorbed. Treina
Based on your scans I would say that neither stamp is grilled which would mean that both are Scott 65. The 3¢ 1861 comes in a myriad of shades, but, again, based on your scans neither is Scott 64 (Pink), Scott 64a (Pigeon blood pink), nor Scott 64b (Rose pink). Additionally, check your perforation gauge as these stamps should gauge 12 and not 15. The ornaments in the corners are intact so they are not Scott 56.
WT Thank you I believe I got my stamps mixed up. Its the other stamps I am going to ask about that perfs 15. Your right on these being 12. Much gratitude for your assessment. May I ask if you believe they are ok quality, I know their not excellent. But, I had hoped they were at least fine enough to apply to my catalog. TJA
I agree that the two stamps you showed are Scott #65, and both appear to be common colors for the issue.
With a common stamp like #65, I would recommend selecting a better quality stamp for your collection. The first stamp has fresh color, and is of decent quality, but the impression doesn't look sharp, and it has several creased perforation tips along the bottom. Also, Washington's face is partially obscured by the cancel, and I find this detracting on stamps.
I would say the quality of the second stamp is fair at best. It is well off-center, with a pen cancel. It has many blunt perf tips, and significant edge damage, including at least one tear on the bottom edge toward the left.
