I should also mention that this makes it almost a certainty that they're German -- (1) the photo of Hindenburg, (2) a topo map of an area that was under German control from 1914-Sep 1918, and (3) AFAIK, neither the French nor Americans (the two Allied armies to fight in that sector) wore ribbons on their uniform in the manner of the soldier on the right, while the Germans did.
