Quote: IMHO we should be celebrating the health of a hobby that has such a wonderful secondary market and defined values and not bemoaning the fact that stamps in this exquisite condition sell for much more than their more ordinary counterparts. I would not be looking at these realizations to gauge the health of the hobby. The buying patterns of the rank and file members of the hobby would be a better metric to analyze. Take away the graded PSE cert, and in most cases the value of these "exquisite" stamps would plummet. I would not call that healthy, I would call it advanced life support. |

I missed a memo somewhere: The stamp market is crashing?
I've seen reports that it is stagnant and/or trending downwards in certain areas.
That doesn't mean "crashing"... unless you listen to the "Sky is falling OMFG!" crowd.
Certain areas are quite vibrant. |

The inverted Jenny that sold for $1,175,000 (not including premium) last year was graded 95 by PSE. I'm sure that contributed to the realization. I got caught up in the bidding a bit yesterday, but only won one stamp for $200. Second cheapest stamp in the auction - lol. Still I probably overpaid, but, well it is a nice one. (lot 96 - not graded) |

Quote: My Jenny is bigger than your Jenny! Take that! I'll trade you 6 Jennies for a photo of Alex with the #10 in each corner... |

Rhett - It just seems ridiculous to get into a grading contest of stamps that 99.999 percent of us will never even come close to owning. They will and are owned by a wealthy few and institutions. Do these people actually need PSE to validate whether or not any given Jenny is worthy? "I cannot own a lowly 75! It must be a 90 or higher." They are free to do what they will, it just seems to have reached new hides of ludicrousness. |

rodgcam, that is exactly the point to me; it is their stamp and they can do what they want with it. We are in agreement on that. If they perceive value in certification and/or grading, then they should do so. On an inverted jenny, it is a decision I will never have to make - lol! |
