You would need to lift the stamp and watermark test to determine it

Lifting this stamp (removing it and then putting it back in place with a stamp hinge) can be a legitimate option for two reasons. First, to ID the stamp. Second and perhaps more importantly, it will reduce the acidification risk that may be going on with the cover. Many covers were manufactured with less expensive low quality paper which contain large amounts of acid forming Lignin; these covers become toned (yellowed, brown, and brittle) and typically they will also tone the stamps on them.

There are some covers in which lifting the stamp is not a good idea. In these cases taking steps to neutralizing the entire cover is a better solution.

Here is what happens to paper after years of acidification

Hi Don and Disi

Thanks for the advice, however looking over my specialized, Swedish tiger and Stamp smarter, and with the perfs the way they are and the type of stamp it is, I deduce, at the moment....it can only be a 444 I reckon, I'm just not comfortable ruining the cover or wrecking the stamp by lifting it.

Cheers men!

Doesn't the date on the envelope help to determine whether the coil stamp is watermarked or not?

The perforations for flat plate coils would be Kiusalas gauge 10-79 vs 10-80 for rotary press coils.

Also, the perforations on the left side row do not directly line up across with those on the right side row which suggests flat plate perforator wheel perforations rather than Stickney coil bar perforator perforations which would align with each other across.
