Per an article I just read from the PF, by Hubert Skinner, there are two non-duplex single bar cancellations from New York from this period.
The one with the slightly larger bar, originates in 1856, while one with a slightly smaller bar originates in 1859.
Postal regulations changed in 1860, to require the CDS to be readable, and be struck on the cover, and not on the stamp. So in 1860 a new duplex cancel, also with an embedded single bar was introduced. It cannot be confused with the prior two.
