I already informed this seller once before what the stamp actually is & told him to look at the design closer. He pulled the listing & now it's back; guess he didn't believe me, or is too blind to see the obvious alterations.

People are already bidding. I sent Gary this message: "This is still a drawn on TV. Don't believe me, send it to 1c Franklin Plating for $16. They'll tell you the same thing. I'll pay for the Plating Certificate, any mailing cost, & I'll give you $600 for the stamp; if they tell you anything different than TV, altered." Doubt I'll get an answer back, probably will just block me. Which is fine with me.

I remember Gary G. From NYC stamp shows as far back as around 1980. This ebay lot nicely represents my impression of him.

I think a good, honest seller is one that doesn't just do the right thing when contacted, but is one that does the right thing even when nobody is looking. That you are able to cheat the least knowledgeable collectors and do it makes you the worst kind of person there is IMO.

Here is a window into the soul of a couple big-name ebay sellers.

And yet if a newbie were to purchase on feedback only he looks like a safe bet. It cannot be stated enough that ebay feedback has virtually zero value. IMHO

Could someone point out exactly in detail the things wrong with the stamp posted above?

He informed me that he ended the listing. I don't even know Gary & I don't know anyone here. That being said, I'm sure he probably is a good person & dealer. I've dealt with him before & wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again(if I'm not blocked already). In the past I've even bought items from him on layaway & made a couple payments. I don't have a problem with him, or anyone here.

I try to point out fakes/altered/misidentified stamps, to save a potential buyer & the seller some disappointment/headache. Some sellers respond positively, others negatively. I recently tried to tell a seller he was selling a trimmed #35, as #13. He responded "it doesn't have a certificate, so the picture is what buyers need to bid off of". I'm sure he probably blocked me too.

perf12, the problem with the stamp is the design is altered (drawn in); on the left, right, & especially at the bottom. The ink isn't even the same color & what's drawn on isn't detailed/mostly just colored on. Funny thing is it looks like the faker was actually trying to make a #18 T1, with complete design & full plumes. If you want I can put the image through paint & point out exactly were the stamp is drawn on. Just ask.

Here's a pic pointing out what's drawn in on the stamp Which is basically all the short ornaments on both sides. The bottom curved line is also drawn in. The drawn in parts look like a blurry mess & don't even really look the real design. I imagine if the stamp wasn't centered high, the top would also have been altered/drawn in.

Type V is the most common Type & is the most incomplete at the sides. A lot are easily distinguishable by the heavy side scratches that are found. Not all *****POSITIONS***** exhibit these scratches, but a lot do. The top & bottom curved lines are always missing(basically to the same extent).

In this pic I've pointed out a large plate scratch on the right side(as found on Type V). I have also pointed out on the bottom, approximately where the REAL line starts & stops. It's easier to see on the left side. If you look close you can see where the original line stops & the drawn in line starts(they're not even the same color).

I mainly use my US Scott Specialized Catalogue, but these sites may help you to identify the types, associated with this issue. Just click on the stamp you want to see & there's diagrams & explanations about each type. There may be other sites that are better & someone can share here. If you have a question on a stamp I'm sure someone here can help! And yes the stamp above was a genuine stamp, now it's a genuine stamp, but has been altered/drawn on.
