This item was originally owned by my grandfather and old fashioned stamp collector. After his death found this piece in his stamp collection, but without any explanation for the Bells image.

I assume, but really don't know for sure that this was used during the Civil War.

My quest is, does any member recognize this usage?

Does any member of a similar example?

Unable to determine which type the San Francisco Cog Cancel is at this time.

The printed bells are part of someone's printed corner card. Bellmaker may be too easy, but maybe a foundry or just somebody named "Bell".

Civil war era for sure. There are also similar San Francisco cds's with year date included.

Usage meaning what exactly? 6˘ would be for a double rate cover, 3˘ per half ounce, if that's what you mean.

It appears to be a type III cogwheel cancel which was in usage from November 1863 to December 1867. Here is a page showing the different types and dates of usage: http://www.rfrajola.com/rm/rm_Page_01.jpg to view the entire 16 page exhibit go here: http://www.rfrajola.com/rm/rmcogs.htm. Your piece is probably from 1864 or later.

Hi, I have an interested in the San Francisco Cog Cancels, but this example is not clear enough to determine which type for sure in my mine. Years ago there was a suggested type 4, but I never saw an example or any descriptive words to define it from the other 3 types.

Usage is actual use!
