Hi all

Someone mailed me a postcard that he bought from a museum in Indiana. Thing is, look at the stamps!

He mailed it to me and didn't even realize he used non-USA stamps!

How did this postcard get through the US mail system with foreign stamps on it? Is it just because of possible tagging on them triggering the auto-sort machines?

JD

1. Stamps are not cancelled, so might they have been put on after the fact.

2. Unlikely, but someone could have had this postcard with them when they traveled to Penhryn.

3. Gremlins.

REV - This felluh lives here in the USofA and didn't even realize the stamps he used weren't American! So I got it right from the mailer himself.

(edited the first post to avoid more confusion)

Nells20, I suspect that you were correct in your original post. The card went through the machine and it is set up to NOT cancel stamps put in the correct place. Here is a stamp show postcard I received last week. The Charlotte canceller is set up the same way.

Wonder why they are losing money? I guess "nobody is home".

An afterthought: The U.S. Postal Service has no doubt spent a considerable amount of money on this automated equipment, and the effect of not caring to set it up properly completely voids any efficiencies it could bring.

Then there are "mail artists" who have successfully sent mail with their own self-designed and obviously fake stamps on it.

Same thing happens in Cyprus. Have regularly sent myself letters without sufficient postage, foreign stamps and invalid Cyprus stamps in old currency - mils and cents in order to get some sort of interesting postal markings but they get delivered just fine

There is an aspect of Stamp Collecting called "Philately for Phun" or is it "Filately for Fun".
On the instructions of my attorney, I cannot say more but there are some very strange people with strange senses of humour.
Shame on me...oops I mean Shame on THEM.
