Going through the Spanish site TodoColección, I came across this offer



This stamp had an Edifil 2023 catalogue price of € 430 (unmounted).




The "80" and "Cts." of the overprint have the same baseline. The true overprint has "Cts." set higher than "80". I am not sure what is going on at the bottom right.


This one has a certificate.

I wonder too if the broken 'S' in "Canarias" is a constant trait of the forgery, and likewise the position of the stop after "Cts." In the forgery, the stop is below the line of the characters; in the genuine the stop is above the line of "Cts."

The whole "CANARIAS" is incorrect. But at first sight, it looks acceptable.

Perf12 added a link to an article of Filatelía Online. This, also, is my source. It draws attention to a forgery of this stamp that is similar to above, if not by the same hand. The on-cover example shown in the link does not have the same break.

Edit:
Having looked at the stops following 'Cts', I notice that in my own block the two stamps on the righthand side are set higher than those on the lefthand side stamps.
Looking at the forged example on Filatelía Online, it has the stop on the baseline. So, there too it seems variable.
I do think these are from one forger. Both above example and that in the article have the slightly lower 'AR' in "CANARIAS".

Billsey _ It's an old forgery.

It's interesting to me how in most cases a forgery can be diagnosed with minimal research to define the differences. Of course, you have to either have the stamp in hand or have a good image before purchase.

Two listings by the same seller on Todocolleccion. Sorting by date, the two are subsequent listings for "Canarias" in the category "Philately / Stamps." No price for guessing which is the slightly suspicious one.

It is the cheapest stamp from the set with a catalogue price of less than € 5.

Here is another one from a seller on todocoleccion, I would avoid as a number of his listings are highly suspect.



He even provides a catalogue number 14hcc (habilitación color c). Interestingly, he describes it as 'surcharged in black instead of blue' and 'not catalogued.'



Wait a minute: an uncatalogued catalogue number 14hcc?

Remember thecover with the complete forged set this stamp is part of? The forger ofthat cover could not be bothered with tildes. And again, this has "AVION" and not "AVIÓN."

The alignment and length of the lines in the overprint is completely off.
The spacing in "VIVA ESPAÑA" is wrong, and the "P" is very strange.

But the big one this seller forgets to add as extremely rare is the real clincher.
There are other genuine overprints where the "18" in the date, erroneously, was substituted for by "13." But this one goes one step further.

This airmail stamp is mediaeval: "1396" instead of "1936."

The reason it has not been catalogued by Edifil is that it is a fake.

This rare unlisted grey overprint can be yours, not for the usual € 50, but for the bargain price of € 45.

Would this be considered a terrible forgery?....

According to the article mentioned on the previous page, the "Cts." being set on the baseline of the "80" is a forgery. I, however, see a lot of these.

The small "R" in "AÉREA" is doubtful. The "s" in "Cts" is too slender and too high. - edit - The "0" in "80" does not look correct either.

And I have my doubts about the alignment (at bottom) of the whole word "CANARIAS".

I would not touch it without a certificate. A very good probability it is a forgery, but a very good one.

The seller is not known for selling garbage. But looking at the large number of these stamps on offer in unmounted condition with this low-set "Cts." I wonder if most sellers are aware of these forgeries.

- edit bis- Another thing that makes me suspicious is the shade of the stamp. Only 800 of these stamps were overprinted, the equivalent of eight sheets. This was not done over a long period of time and on existing stock of republican stamps. All genuine examples I am sure of are on a bright reddish chestnut stamp. Although not impossible, and although pictures may not show true colours, this stamp appears to be in a markedly different shade. At least, this raises the question whether it would have been likely a stock of eight sheets would show such variation in the colour.

This criminal fell into my bag today...

Todocoleccion is a good source for forgeries.

Here are the original stamps overprinted for airmail from the Canary Islands by Lufthansa's South America flight. The set (nrs. 1 - 3) was catalogued (2023) at € 90.50 by Edifil. The seller offers these never hinged mint at € 30. He fails to mention the almost perfectly vertically aligned double overprint on the Pts. 1'25 stamp.



The overprint has serifs that were never used for the true overprint. The "Pts. 0" are much too slender on the two lower values, as is the whole last line on the highest value. The width of the second line is incorrect. The vertical spacing between the lines of the overprint is off. The "8" in the "18" of the overprints is in an incorrect fount. And, the most frequent sign of forgery makes its appearance once again: the tildes is missing on the "O" of "AVIÓN" on all three stamps.
