Scott 211, ACSC 260. I know that Scott reports the watermark direction as viewed from the BACK, but, according to ACSC, this one is supposed to be as viewed from the front. ACSC describes this as Watermark C of A, Sideways, Top of crown facing left. If I am viewing it right, when viewed from the front, it sure looks like the top of the crown is facing to the right. I checked the only single that I have in my collection, and it is also pointing to the right.

It should be noted that I checked this against a block that I have of ACSC 263 which is also claimed to be top of crown facing left. In that case, the crown is indeed facing left (when viewed from the front).

I think that my ACSC is just wrong in this case. Agree?

Opinion:
Normal Stamp.
The ball on the Crown is on the Right Hand Side (Looking from the front)

Is this the "Reddish Shade" of the Brown Purple, in your opinion ?

Thanks Rod. So the ACSC is wrong when it says that the crown should be facing to the left? (As I stated, I have another stamp where ACSC says it should be facing to the left, and it is indeed facing in the opposite direction, the left.)

I'm not sure about the color. I can check again by next weekend.

That is how I see it.
I feel the problem lies with the phrase "facing left" or "facing right" "pointing left" or "pointing right"
It leaves some error of interpretation.
The watermark as I see it is "sideways inverted"

I have never understood why Gibbons continues to indicate how the Watermark is seen from the front of the stamp.
We all look generally from the rear, via fluid or water or light.
Why confuse the issue?

A couple of corresponding opinions from another Forum..........
(Happy to stand corrected)

Hi Partime

The paper of the ACSC 260 1/3d Hereford Bull was watermarked with the C of A sideways and the crown facing right, looking from the back gives a mirror effect, everything in reverse (the crown will be facing left), this is why the watermark should be viewed from the front.

There are two types. 260A - Reddish Brown; and, 260B - Purple Brown.

This information was sourced from the 2015 issue of the ACSC, page 6/204..

Rob

No. It looks very much like a Reddish-Brown, in my opinion. Thanks to everyone for the information.
