L'Archimède was a French bathyscaph launched in 1961 and used for deep sea exploration. Over a period of nine years it performed a total of 139 dives. Here is an image of a stamp depicting l'Archimède, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on January 26, 1963 to publicize the research vessel's successful dive to a record 9,200 meters, Scott No. 1052, Y&T No. 1368. - nethryk |

The ships mail room post mark on the first page reminded me I had this. Ok, it's not a stamp, but I think an interesting maritime artifact. And the letters are stamped into it. This was in a cigarette box full of coins that I inherited from my Dad. I have no idea where he got it, he was a bit of an accumulator. I've sent letters to the US Navy archives, assuming it was a US ship, but they were no help. Obviously meant to hold keys, but otherwise, a mystery. |

I know when it comes to Ships everyone loves the Canadian Bluenose, but I think this one is just as stunning as the Bluenose. 1941 destroyer |

stallzer - A nice one indeed! Here is an image of a stamp depicting the business end of the Royal Netherlands Navy's light cruiser HNLMS De Ruyter, commissioned in 1936, and sunk by a single Japanese torpedo during the Battle of the Java Sea, February 27-28, 1942. This stamp was designed by Prof. J.B. Romein, engraved by A.B. Hill, printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., and issued by the Netherlands government in exile in London on June 15, 1944, primarily for use on Dutch warships, Scott No. 265, SG No. 598. Also, here is a photo of the De Ruyter in 1936. - nethryk |

Great juxtaposition of images: first the Canada Scott#262 tribal class destroyer moving left and then the next image of the cruisers guns face on (Netherlands Scott#265). Almost the same Scott numbers too. |

I really have no idea what stamp(s) this is. I got this sheet in a packet of 100 ship stamps. I can't even tell what country it is. If you click on the image, it should open a new window with an enlarged version, so you'll be able to see the stamps better. |
