Coloboque - Nice stamps! Suggestion: If you would set the size of your stamp images to no more than 800 x 600 pixels each, I believe it would really help out those collectors who use dial-up service to access the forum.

MS Gripsholm was an ocean liner built in 1925 by Armstrong Whitworth in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England for the Swedish American Line for use in transatlantic crossings from Gothenburg to New York City. From 1927 onwards she was also used as a cruise ship. From 1942 to 1946, the USA chartered Gripsholm as an exchange and repatriation ship under the auspices of the International Red Cross, with a Swedish captain and crew. Here is an image of a definitive stamp depicting MS Gripsholm, designed by Swedish graphic artist Olle Hjortzberg (1872-1959), engraved by Sven Ewert, and issued by Sweden on February 20, 1936, Scott No. 261, Facit No. 256.

Liberia :
The "Alligator" first settlers' ship

Is that a heron nesting in the date palm
or just a bent frond.

The only stamp I can afford for my album.

nethryk,

I've got about a dozen postcards and covers sent by one of the Gripsholm's passengers during its cruise from New York to Rio in 1937 -- thanks for pointing out that the ship was the subject of a stamp. Here is how she looked in the water.

And here are a few more ship stamps -- United States 1989.

Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting an aircraft carrier, issued by Brazil on March 7, 1958 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Tamandaré (1807-1897), whose dedication and heroism made him the patron of the Brazilian Navy, Scott No. 1857, SG No. 970.

Thanks SF for letting me know. I've now signed up with tinypic and that transferred me over to photobucket, so hoping these are still showing OK.

This is a Cinderella boat stamp.

The writer of the card is the designer of the stamp - Ralph Dyer.

He writes ........."the above seal is the design I made for that event (4th ASDA National Postage Stamp Show - Nov 1952......."

The ship depicted on the seal is SS United States - a luxury passenger liner built in 1952 for the United States Lines designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record.

Built at a cost of $78 million, the ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States, the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, and retains in her retirement the Blue Riband given to the passenger liner crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service with the record highest speed.

Her construction partially subsidized by the United States government, the ship was designed to allow conversion to a troop carrier should the need have arisen. The United States operated uninterrupted in transatlantic passenger service until 1969; since 1996 she has been docked at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia.
