I wonder if it has already been lifted once? There is an odd bit of discoloration about two thirds of the way up on the right margin. Glue? It seems like the stamp should have been tied by the end of one segment of the killer. I any event, the grill looks strong enough from here to ID it without lifting the stamp.

A much larger scan at 600 or better might help someone here determine the grill. I'm far from an authority on this issue. If I'm remembering correctly the color and NY cancel could indicate a #85--but that's probably a very long shot. I'm not in the camp of "don't lift it". I've lifted stamps from covers to identify--particularly W/Fs. I've even had the APS authorize lifting before sending stamps in for expertizing. I don't recommend lifting where its problematic about whether or not the stamp originates.
