Once more I ask for the communities help... looks like these are both Scott 150 (no secret mark) and I know that Scott lists different shades but this one is so different I had to ask... any advice is wonderful and appreciated. The yellow brown is re-gummed with a little thin. A nice stamp :)

Scott 187 is yellow brown w/o secret mark on soft porous paper. Scott 197 is deep brown and oftentimes does not show a secret mark having been printed from a Continental plate that was re-entered. |

Appreciate it rogdcam. Pretty sure its not a 197 so how can I tell if its a 150 or a 187? |

The Re-Engraving/background shading & color. I see #209 missidentified more than any other stamp. Don't know why, surely most people can count to 4 & 5! |

You don't need to count the lines. I always zero in on the top of the shield. The heavy line along the top is non-existent on the re-engraved stamp. There are other differences too that are easier to observe than counting those little lines. |

Sorry I wasn't directing that at you. I was just pointing out that people don't seem to know how to count the lines at left. I guarantee you if the OP counts the lines there will be 4, not 5. |

I don't really bother counting the lines either, but it's a way to tell them apart. I can just look at a #209 & can tell it's a #209 because it's reengraved & has a different appearance. I just noticed the scrolls (where secret mark is found) also appear to be smaller on #209. |

Lively discussion on this stamp (more than what I was expecting). You are right, I counted and there were 4 lines. Should have done this before posting but glad I didn't as I learned a little more on how to ID these. Really appreciate the help / education. |

Quote: Nonsense. The left stamp is not a 209. To anyone who really knows the re-engraved issues of 1881-82, the left stamp virtually SCREAMS its identity. Counting lines of frame engraving may be a handy shortcut, but the real point is to understand why the re-engraving was done and what that tells you about what to expect in the appearance. The structure of the whole design is heavier, as though they needed broader lines to make an impression on softer paper with the same broad plates. That was the problem and the plan, and the look is what you get in the left stamp. Once you know "the look" you won't need to count lines. |
