Can anyone identify this Norway postmark on Scott #196? To me it looks like "Pustvatnet" but an internet search does not turn up anything?

Thanks,
erthur

The translations come out to be "Lake Post" for the Norwegian term "Post Vatnet"

I have no idea what that means, but I will do some further digging,

Intriguing Postmark.
Look forward to someone solving this.

Vatnet seems to mean "Lake" in Norwegian
ex: Linnevatnet (after the Swedish Botanist)
ex: Haussvatnet

I could only get one reference to PUSTVATNET which I believe it is
(U not O )

You may have an unusual postmark there.

Not that I would know what I am talking about, but there is a POSTVATNET here........
(They are currently having a heatwave...it is 2 degrees )

Another suggestion is FUSTVATNET which was in use at the right time.

Here's a listing in Norwegian from a postal database:

This location is in Nordland.

Nigelc, a search I did also resulted in A "Fustvatnet" but my result only referenced a lake in Nordland County.

Here is a closeup of the first 2 letters of the postmark. I thought that the first letter could be an "F" but it certainly appears to be a "P".

As for the second letter it is still questionable. It appears to be a "U" but a small smudge of ink also makes it appear to be an "O".

Here's a Google maps link to lake FUSTVATNET which is north east of the small town of Mosjøen (as mentioned in the previous database link):

Norway has a website called KulturNav that's very handy for things like this. If you go to the Norwegian Post Museum's website, it directs you to KultureNav's database for postmarks.

According to KulturNav, the Fustvatnet post office was in operation near the lake of the same name (linked above by nigelc) from 1 October 1921 until 1 November 1968 (though there was possibly some use of the name earlier -- the Google translation of Norwegian isn't very clear). At that time, it was closed, and mail service for the area changed to the Mosjøen post office.

Hi PostmasterGS, Did you notice that KulturNav had taken you to the same database record that I had given a link for?

Ahhh, I missed this thread about my own 'backyard' until now
Good to see you guys are interested in Norwegian postmarks.
The database refered to by nigelc already is THE place to search for Norwegian postmarks - well done nigelc.

The name 'Fust' comes from the name of the river 'Fusta' it is connected to. https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusta
The word fusta means nothing in spoken Norwegian language, but it is presumed that the river got its name because it is 'fus' - a rarely used old word meaning the river is wild and roaring, as in not quiet.

@erthur - Beautiful postmark - I've never even heard of the place before so it is probably not common postmark to find - a keeper!

Interesting stuff guys.
I still consider it open.
Dashed if I can convince myself, the initial letter to be an "F"
There is an upward stroke on the right handed arm.

Has to be a "U", an "O" would not give enough space to the outer ring of the CDS.

I'd be taking this to the Norwegian Philatelic society for consideration.

Sc#1
Opinions on this Postmark please.
Looks like a 12 bar gridiron, very accurately rotated and re-struck, to give a cross hatch.
Or a forgery?

Not seen before.

Rod, an interesting cancel indeed. It almost looks too crazy to be a forgery, and I have never seen the gridiron cancel made double like this. Pity the stamp is missing the bottom margin as it would be worth buying, if just for the curiosity value. Make them an offer for AU $20!

Tim,
thanks for your encouragement
Outside my budget.

I have a list of every postmark on Scott #1's, and none meet this criteria,
I'll save the scan as a query / poss forgery.
That's possibly also why it hasn't sold as yet.
