Imperforate and part perforate revenue stamps were used very soon after they first came out, in 1862.

These stamps with cancels dated much later, such as this one from 1872, can't be genuine.

Especially if they have no imperforate margins, again such as this one.

Although these are fakes, it's entirely possible for even very late usages to be genuine part perfs or imperfs. However they must be from San Francisco, or at least the California area. For some reason many were used there even as late as 1871.

Great, California has always been the boonies then?

We're going to slide into the Pacific with the next quake anyway, from what I've heard.

Ha ha

Madeleine Peyroux (The Blue Room) sings me the blues when I head up to the City in the car,

She sings Warren Zevon , see verse 2

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill

Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves

Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmm...
Look away
(Look away down Gower Avenue, look away)

Ahh, Sir Rod. Quoting the Great Zevon. A man after my own heart!

I actually got a Canada Post ad, just before the song started. Magic!

Very Interesting James.
Thanks.
Prefer Madeleine's treatment (poss due to vast repetition) but the lyrics are what carry it skyward.

Miss Peroux's voice is like whipped cream.

I think it safe to say that in the 1862-1871 period, anywhere outside of the center of a few major cities was the boonies.

Yeah, the California late usages are fascinating, yet puzzling. Undoubtedly genuine examples exist, yet I've not read any definitive reasoning as to why they exist, and why only California?

Some examples from my collection:

This one, while not identifiable as a Californie usage, is insanely late for a part perf usage, yet undoubtedly genuine. It must have been lying in a bottom of a cabinet somewhere. NOTE: This strip of 10 is the longest possible strip, as it encompasses the height of the entire sheet.

It must be California, no one had revenues lying around for very long, certainly not for several years. Taxes have always been paid on an as needed basis. I doubt if even large companies bought more then a few weeks worth in advance. I have seen several other obviously genuine 1871 part perf and imperf usages.

The best explanation I have heard is that California received a very large shipment early on and never had enough need to reorder more; the quantity of imperf and part perf stamps shipped simply lasted until the second issue. It would not surprise me if there was a lot of untaxed paper floating around there at the time.

Yeah, we do stuff at our own pace out here, including paying taxes.

It's probably because most of us aren't squished into millions of skyscrapers.

All this wide open, sunshiny land inspires you to slow down a bit.

You seem to be confusing two different time periods here.

Just implying that one place has more people per square mile than another.

I may still be confused however.

Lucidity has rarely been my friend.
