This is what happens when someone decides being artsy-fartsy or unique is more important than just showing what's there.

There is an infamous auction catalog displaying a bunch of rare US coil pairs on its color cover. The "Wile E. Coyote, Genius" photographer apparently got to design the catalog cover, and just stood up the stamps against and on top of the props he used. Pretty easy, because the hot photography lights curled up every pair.

EDIT: I take that first comment back. After closer inspection, I think this seller just rested the camera phone on its side edge to steady it on the table.

I don't know, but perhaps the seller thinks he's an artiste, or is having a Dali moment....

These things make nice carpets -- maybe a front door would be another option.

Yeah, it's annoying. There's a particular seller on both ebay and stamps2go that just LOVES to scan his stamps on bright fluorescent yellow, pink, and orange backgrounds, and it skews the colors horribly, either in the TWAIN software or in the viewer's eyes.

I'm sure he thinks he's being innovative.

The only backgrounds that should ever be used when imaging stamps are black or white, in that order of preference. Obviously if the stamp is on cover or document, you don't have much choice in the matter, but for Pete's sake, do NOT scan using brightly colored backgrounds.
