Very interesting. A fair number of passed lots... but also lots of very high realizations, especially the postal history with fancy cancels. Admittedly not my area, but some were drop-dead gorgeous examples.

Add 18% juice.

Some of the better results:

2009. Est: $7,500-10,000. Hammer: $16,000
2010. Est: $3,000-4000. Hammer: $8,000
2014. Est: $20,000-30,000. Hammer: $50,000
2087. Est: $5,000-7,000. Hammer: $11,000
2090. Est: $5,000-7,500. Hammer: $13,000
2173. Est: $1,000-1,500. Hammer: $5,250
2192. Est: $2,000-3,000. Hammer: $8,500
2335. Est: $10,000-15,000. Hammer: $24,000
2339. Est: $1,000-1,500. Hammer: $8,000
2342. Est: $400-500. Hammer: $11,000
2350. Est: $2,000-3,000. Hammer: $17,500
2351. Est: $200-300. Hammer: $6,000
2407. Est: $5,000-7,000. Hammer: $21,000

2447. Est: $200-300. Hammer: $2,100
2482. Est: $2,000-3,000. Hammer: $13,000

I ended up going 1 for 1, so it was worthwhile.

Fancy cancellations on cover were sizzling in Siegel's auction

Too bad I own none of that.

This was quite a sale. The top end of the market for what was sold is in perfectly good shape.

It is always amazing to me, how many 1847 covers there are out there, and how hard it is to actually find a good quality one. You can find really good quality 1851 issue covers, with some looking. 1847 covers, not so much. So when good quality 1847's on cover show up, its game on, on the auction floor.

The fancy cancels in this sale were pretty sick. They were high quality strikes on full covers of some of the top cancels sought after. Predictable results.

That was a wonderful collection of 12c 1861's, I believe, from a board member here.

I was a little surprised at the realization of Dr. Robertson's Cross-Border stampless collection. Lot 2103. He was a serious collector of the subject, and I suspect the buyer got a heck of a deal.

The one lot I was really interested in was 10c ,1847 cover double transfer type B

I believe with margins and cancel it is definitely one of finest, or the finest example, of the stamp.

I didn't bid, but made no difference as I would have been embarrassed by my bid, as it went for more than twice the estimate ...sold for $4500 plus tip.

Yea the stamp alone on that cover - the 31R - is certainly one of the finest known from that position. That stamp off-cover would have sold for a similar amount.

I always get a little nervous with covers that have immortalized fingerprints on them -- although that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make me look much more critically at it.

Some items brought exceptional results, but the ones that did were exceptional items.

A good example is that New York Union Soldier's Head cover; it's an absolutely fantastic item as are those Angell correspondence patriotics that brought well over estimate.

I managed to obtain 6 covers in the sale, 3 of them for my 24c collection and I am thrilled with my purchases.
