When you assemble your albums with pages you printed yourself, do you insert sheets of tissue/glassine between the pages, to prevent the printing from bleeding or rubbing off onto the adjacent pages?

Is bleeding more prevalent with laser or ink-jet printed pages?

Assume stamps are inserted into Hawid mounts or similar.

Laser don't bleed, will rub off only if you scratch it

I have been printing my own album pages now for over ten years but never had any trouble with bleeding. My only trouble was several years ago when I was on a cheap kick and used recycled ink cartridges. They left a double impression which made the pages look a bit out of focus.

I use inkjet printer and have never had any problems. I think there are issues with refillable ink and inkjet printers though.

@itma - thanks for starting this thread - I am also curious about the potential ink migration issue.

Thousands of collectors worldwide have been using Steiner pages for years, most of them (I presume) have printed using normal 'household' inkjet printers - and many of them are hinging the stamps directly on the Steiner page. I would think many/most would have experienced migration issues by now if this is likely to happen? Example given - when a stamp is hinged in ink-filled-boxes like on the Steiner page below, will it be affected by the ink or not?

Would anybody mind to check their German semi postal stamps? (or any other stamp hinged above similar amount of ink)
If a significant group of people responds, we could establish if this is a concern or not.

btw - I posted a similar question in another thread, but had only 1 response . The good thing is that until now nobody has responded that they have seen ink migrating to the stamps. https://goscf.com/t/53933&whichpage=5 br /

Don't forget that most people will mount stamps above a certain CV ($5 or $10?), in which case the stamps will not be in contact with the ink.

I mount all my stamps on Album Generated pages so I do not expect problems

The pages are therefore protected (so are the stamps) and I like it. Respect to colleagues who use hinges.

As soon as I purchased Steiner pages, I migrated to a Monochrome Laser printer ($34 if memory serves)

Recently purchased a new Brother HL2340 Monochrome Laser printer circa $80

For those looking for the next level in album pages, I would suggest getting a color laser printer. I purchased an HP M252dw. The price was just over $300. This may seem expensive to some given how little a B&W laser is these compares to years ago. Th

Compared to inkjets, the photo print quality is not as good as the best inkjets but the quality of the output looks like a printed book especially on glossy laser paper. You get very black blacks. The refill cartridges are not cheap but the high yield cartridges are rated for 2800 pages and never dry out.

Chris.
They are monochrome (Black only) no colour.

1. They work for about 4 years, then the drum usually goes, you can replace the drum, (tried it) but cheaper to buy a new laser.

2. They are supplied with low toner, expect to buy a new toner cartridge after say 500 sheets (New Toner $14 3000 pages)

I do not recommend this one (unknown) but gives you abn idea how budget they are. (forget the "extra cover" )

Thanks to all for your comments. I asked the question originally because I have had instances in the past where India ink and laser printing has rubbed off onto the adjacent pages. I am, however, talking of stuff which has been carted around in a somewhat nomadic life for forty years or so, not always under ideal conditions. I am generally not so concerned about the effect on the stamps which are all in mounts, but in the aesthetic effect of the staining on the back of the previous page.

I have, for a long time been a refiller of inkjet cartridges but very quickly found that, in buying the ink, quality trumps low cost every time. I now use a Canon 100 and an Epson 3770 printers and am very happy with both. Unfortunately, converting the Canon cartridges to refillable is a fiddley job so I have tended to buy Canon original cartridges.

I think I'll do some tests before committing to printing pages. If, or when, I report back.

Blaamand, yes, I was surprised that this topic doesn't seem to have been raised before.

Frank.

I use a Epson WF-3540 inkjet for printing my Steiner pages and have never seen any bleed over. I always use the Epson original ink cartridges, however.
Best of luck.

I have used a number of Epson printers in the past. While the print quality was in the same range as the Canon printers, every one of them was plagued with blocked nozzles in the print head. This is really my fault, as I have extended periods away from home, leaving the printers unexercised. I find that Canon performance here had two advantages:

1. My Canon 100 has never clogged, even after being deserted for considerable perios. My previous Canon 9000s did clog up but I found that the clean nozzle utility worked far better than on the Epson.

2. On my Canons, print heads have been very easy to remove for cleaning or replacement. On the Epson, replacing the print head is an intricate operation and doing so voids the warranty.

I do, however, still have an Epson WF7620 sitting on a bench. The print head is totally clogged but it makes for a very cheap large format scanner.

Frank.

Hmmm, is nobody out there mounting stamps on Steiner pages with hinges ? When reading other posts it seems to me hinges are favored by many, at least for used stamps. Your experience with potential ink migration would be very much appreciated !
