I have a bunch of old postage due stamps. And this one stands out. What's going on with the color. The entire stamp is dyed that odd red color.

When the stamp was soaked in water the aniline ink ran.

I just read about this when learning about stamp collecting (floating). Evidently these types of stamps from this era were printed with water-soluble ink to prevent people from washing off the cancellation mark and reusing it.

In addition to the ink running (obvious in the picture)red staining can occur when including stamps on red paper in the soaking. Stamps on colored paper should be soaked separately to avoid staining of other stamps.
