Auction Prices Europe High And Rising?

Since I am located in Europe I follow the sales there.this auction just ended and all prices are in Euro's

i think quite a lot op them are very high results for the quality, what do you think?

(i had no items for sale nor did I buy from this Auction, they runn one every week, on occasion I do buy and sell there)

My screen keep getting garbage across it from the link you posted here,seems they want me to join ,never heard of the auction firm . Do they just sell their stuff and call it a auction ?

I would think that with the stock market and general economy the high end material should be in demand. There is a lot of money out there looking for a home.

When I read this the 1st thing that came to mind was 2017 limited minted 1oz gold coins.

Even a 1 of 6 only 1940 Australia stamp was passed in at res $125,000. That does not look very good as a top end investment.

Investing in collectibles is not for me.

I guess that's right. Just check out the prices realized at Siegel for their Columbian Airmails auction. Nearly all lots exceeded estimates. Of course it only takes two interested bidders to bring those results, but I was still amazed.

DRY TECH ----never look at one auction to judge the whole market . To give you a example ,I ran out of money buying at a Kelleher Auction ,I was buying German Colonies at half of estimates and around 1/10 of catalog ,I was shocked and broke and they kept selling lots at those levels. That wouldn't of happen 15 years ago or 40 years ago .

@ floortrader - I would never be so foolish as to judge the stamp market or any market by just one or even only a few auctions or other sales. Just noticed an instance of money looking for a home.

By the way, I am a buyer only of stamps. If a market is weak or strong, I will only buy when something I want is offered at what I consider the right price.

"there is a lot of money out there"-----That is a under statement . A little story would help , back in 1980's I was working at the Chicago Board of Trade. The Hunt family started to control the world SILVER market by buying all the inventory for silver bars . The newspapers said the Hunt family were one of the few families in the world that had more than $400 million dollars in cash to control a big part of that market .
Now skipping to today 2017 ,now there are over 2,500 different investment funds and traders out there that have ready cash in excess of $400 millions . Some have billions of dollars of ready cash if they decided to invest . The money moving around the world daily is just staggering .
There was a article in Linn's Stamp News that said the whole philatelic market could be controlled for around $200 million . The closes anybody came to influencing the stamp market place was the Greg Manning-Afinsa connection but that fell apart fast .

I agree, floortrader, that money could concievably "control" a rather small market such as philately (in the scheme of global finances with the technology we have today).

However human nature--greed--being ever-predictable, I believe any attempt to "corner the market" or manipulate it to ones advantage, would ultimately backfire. Do you remember the "investors" demanding "NH" material, without even knowing what "NH" designated?

True philatelists will likely rebel or see through any attempt to "run up" or otherwise manipulate the philatelic trade. Those "collectors" or investors seeking to turn a quick profit will likely get their fingers burned, though some might make a small fortune here and there.

Just my two cents worth.

For example, in the late 1970's, when everyone and their brother seemed to be collecting-investing in US plate blocks I ran the other way (and didn't look back). Sold what little I had at or close to the "top" of the market.....for me swimming against the stream is in my genes! I had been collecting for over a decade, but was (and remain) a philatelist at heart.

Conversely, around the same time, although I knew little about coins, being just a toe-in-the-water-beginning "collector" I hoarded--and overpaid--as many silver coins as came my way.

Not knowing the true market for coins, and their relationship to intrinsic precious-metal "value" l stupidly thought silver coins or bullion were great investments. I was reading everything I could back then about the Hunt brothers and their near-cornering of the silver market. I just was on the wrong side of their gamble!

Now l stick to collecting what I know and enjoy, without looking at the potential for a return (or lack thereof). There are enough of us out there, as evidenced by this stamp community and others, to carry us through good times as well as the not-so-good times.

There are some dealers who exert some control over small parts of the stamp market.

I would never buy on Catawiki..(everything overpriced)
