dudley - Thanks for posting that. I had not noticed the centerline doubling there. It looks like they got a bit fast and loose with making the centerline there.

tx, according to the text of the Cipolla exhibit the center line of Plate 1 early was recut, along with all the other recutting done to produce Plate 1 Late. I had not realized this before I acquired this item. The doubled center line is thus the equivalent of the "split top line" found on many of the individual recut positions on Plate 1 Late.

Yes, you are correct. It is interesting, the finer line you can see is definitely the old PL 1E centerline, which was finely ruled, and quite familiar.

I find it interesting that they bothered to recut the centerline. The stamp positions, which had worn notably, I understand. But the centerline? I guess, while they were at it .....

Update: I believe the photo I posted of 80L1L is actually 90L1L (double recut at bottom). I have another example with center line also showing this doubling that is clearly 90L1L. I will post the two together after I scan the second one.

Ok, so what I had labeled in my collection as 80L1L with doubled center line (first image below) is actually 90L1L with doubled center line (confirmed by another item I have shown in the second image below). The Siegel database confirms that it is 90L1L rather than 80L1L that will show this doubled center line. The information in the Cipolla exhibit is incorrect. Live and learn!

ETA: Not to mention that they are both Relief B!

Dudley, does that mean that you don't have a complete left pane of plate 1 late?

Here's a companion piece to the 10L1L I posted earlier: 1-2-3R1L with layout dot and center line.

Dudley, that is a beautiful strip. Too bad it did not have the the 4R1L with it. Send me that image for the DB.

Thanks to Dudley, I have an image for all positions for plate 1 late in the database.
