Looking through my 'pending file', I came across these two items. Not sure if they have any philatelic relevance?

If someone could translate the orange and purple cachets, any help would be most appreciated in establishing what they are? All that I can make out are the dates 1928?

Thanks for looking
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

This document is related to land tax, submitted to the village office of Shin-gi village, Taka-shima-gun ("gun"=county) then transferred to tax office of Ima-zu town; thus unfortunately there's no philatelic relevance.

The title of the document could be translated as "notification of conversion of land classification", notifying the classification of the requester's land to be changed from "field" to "mountain forest" in terms of taxation. The red cachet is the receipt date mark of Shin-gi village, Takashima-gun dated Jan 13, Showa 3 (1928). The purple ones are those of tax office of Imazu town; all places are now in Shiga prefecture.

It is quite amazing to see this kind of document in your 'pending file'... there should be more treasures hidden inside :-)

Hi Hironobu

Thank you for your detailed reply as always.

I decided to delve deeper into the 'file' and found a further document consisting of twenty pages or more with plans of building and roads etc. I have selected a few pages which may be of interest to followers of Japanese revenue stamps - as this file has a revenue stamp attached.. This file is dated 1931?

How do you write up and display such an item?

I realise that this topic could take up a lot of image space and is of minor philatelic interest. Therefore should any readers be further interested in these files/documents and would like to see further examples, then please contact me via my private email.

Hi Andrew,

The document is for the notification of land division, and the sheet with the revenue stamp is the power of attorney addressed to Ima-zu town tax office for the legal procedures required for this action. The land owner aimed to divide his field (area of 1800 "Tan"; 1 Tan = 991 square meters = approx. 1 are) into two fields (1000 and 800 "Tan"s each). The documents are dated Showa 6, that is 1931 as you've mentioned.

The revenue stamp itself should be General revenue, Taisho granite paper 2 sen green.

Place the document in an appropriate large envelope, with Horonobu's explanation, pasted to the cover.

If need be, scans of appropriate postmarks, auxilliary markings, etc on your Album page, with explanation of the documents, and where the envelope resides.

That's how I would handle it.

Hironobu,

Thanks for your detailed analysis of the above document. Its been more that a big help, I can now file any similar items I have for future study.

I would have never been able to try and sort these items without your input. thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am sure that I write on behalf of many collectors who have an interest in Japanese philately, are not conversant with the language and don't collect these items. For them I would say join the 'Stamp Community', there are always persons helpful and willing to share their knowledge for beginners like myself.

rod222,

Looking through more of these land tax documents, I came across the following, not sure if it is related to these documents?

It could be a land registry certificate or maybe a share or bond certificate? Your help appreciated.
