\ Am I the only one who goes crazy for KGV multiples? This block of six three penny KGV (small multiple watermark) was offered to me years ago from a dealer for.....six times what he normally charges for a single stamp! I recall paying about what a coffee drinker pays at Starbucks for a cup of fancy java. I know the upper right stamp has a missing corner but otherwise I was delighted with my "find"! And I don't even drink coffee...... Multiples of early (classic era) Australia, as well as most other countries, are gaining popularity, especially since the Scott Classic catalogue now has a few listings for certain countries, and the premiums on blocks of four--or even pairs--of relatively inexpensive stamps can be significant. ============================================================================ Do you have any multiples of KGV? Or other early Australia area? Let's see them! --Jim Wentzell stampguyaps177-681 PS I was also curious about the unusual cancel, one I haven't seen before. "WN" must signify something, right? Or could it be an upside-down "MN"?

jim, I think the "WN" cancel is a parcel cancel from Wellington (NZ). As was also the case in South Africa, the parcel cancels for the larger offices in New Zealand consisted of two letter abbreviations of the place name. So Auckland is "AK" and, in South Africa, "DN" is Durban.
I really think multiples should be priced, especially for the major Kangaroo and KGV issues. Some multiples must be extremely uncommon and should be recognised as such. |

I have been wracking my grey stuff for that "WN" Still not convinced, not seen a double ring "2nd Class" postmark before. (Perhaps that AK in the top row, is a double ring?) Hope you're right. Some 2nd Class and duplex NZ Pmks. |

jimjamtwo,Thank you for solving the WN Cancellation Mystery; now I can sleep better :-) I guess that meant the block was posted to New Zealand, or is there another reason for a foreign (Wellington NZ) cancellation? Pity the cover no longer exists. Or maybe the stamps paid for a parcel sent, perhaps over the holidays long ago..... KGV Collector,The block I posted is watermarked Small Crown and A (is that known down under as the second watermark? I always get confused) Here is the scan: --Jim Wentzell stampguyaps177-681 |

I almost forgot about this strip of four one-pound Kangeroos I got at StampShow 2016 in NYC last year, from a well-known Australian dealer after asking him for a nice block or multiple. I paid a fair price (or so I thought) yet today when I scanned it I realized there is a crease on the top stamp which I hadn't previously noticed. A couple short ("fuzzy"?) perfs on the bottom stamp as well. Sure wish I had the cover or more likely, the parcel piece it came from! Still I think it looks nice in my collection! --Jim Wentzell stampguyaps177-681 |

I always prefer using the locals' terminology, so small multiple (watermark) it is.

rod222, you're right - it doesn't look like the usual NZ parcel cancel. If it's not Wellington, I simply have no idea what else it could be.
jimwentzell, it's not uncommon to find foreign cancels on KGV issues, especially ones from NZ. I probably find at least one or two a year. If any stamps on a parcel were left uncancelled, which could easily happen if there were a lot of stamps on it, it was probably considered a good idea to cancel it at the receiving office. |
