When I began collecting as a kid in the 1950's, all the adult collectors I knew used Carbon Tetrachloride for watermarking and seeing flaws on stamps. I remember that I had to get it over the counter from the pharmacist at the drug store. By the time I left collecting for a while (I left in the 1970s), a lot of collectors had switched to lighter fluid because of the adverse health effects that had been discovered with the use of carbon tet. Although practically not flammable at all, some central nervous system and liver disorders were starting to be associated with prolonged exposure to carbon tet fumes. When I returned to collecting in the 1990s, lighter fluid was still being used and either then or shortly after, Clarity was developed. All collectors I know today use lighter fluid or Clarity for this purpose.

An earlier thread noted the difference in manufacturers, and jkjblue was kind enough to link to the MSDS. I looked at them in this thread:

Essentially, slight differences between Zippo and Ronsonol, but not enough to get worried about.

I suppose repeated exposure to ultraviolet light isn't good for us either. Maybe we should just stop collecting altogether. :)

I guess one advantage of having a UV lamp is that it will also show you phosphorescent tagging. 2-in-1!

Anyway, can anyone give me a reason to prefer one type of UV device over another? Or are they all basically the same?
