Am curious if anyone is aware of a set of pages for the US Transportation coils. ALL the coil series including the varieties, not just PNCs or the basic stamps themselves.
My gut & a lot of googling says whatever is available is pretty vanilla thus my best bet is to make my own pages, probably using the Scott cat as the basis for the entries. But before I embark on such a quest I thought it best to ask here first. Shoot, even monkeys fall from trees, right? :)

hi grandpa. The Transportation Coils are my specialized area. I make my own pages and use Album Easy. I have now some 25 albums full of varieties, plus several tins with partial and complete rolls. In short, I am not aware of a specialized album for these. As ar as I know, there is also not a specialized catalog,

Peter, are you serious - 25 albums of varieties? Dang, I'd never have expected flyspecking could be carried that far! Would love to do something like that myself but baby steps are required here to start so I'll have to stick with whatever Scott and StampSmarter show as varieties and build pages from there, then some blanks behind them for the many flyspecking finds. I need to locate a large lot of Transpo's for flyspecking purposes so I can get on the same path as you are. The Transpo's have always fascinated me, Americana's too. Should you know where a lot of Transpo's might be located for flyspecking I'd be most interested! |

John, I have been collecting those since the first day they came out. To obtain these I contact all sorts of sources, lately mainly APS circuits and PNC3 auctions. Like I said earlier, there is no comprehensive catalog for varieties but something may help. Are you aware of the website http://pnc3.org ? On it you can find the 20 to 25 year old issues of Mr Esrati, "The Plate Number". In almost every issue is a "variety corner" where you can find lots of interesting plate faults. Also on ebay you can sometimes find good assortments of PNC's. Hope this helps a little? Peter |

Scott did pages for the national album. I just bought 3 albums worth off ebay. The pages give enough room for plate number strips of 5 for each plate number. |

Thx Peter, I'll revisit the PNC3 site. Thinking it was strictly about PNC's, I never dug really deep into it as that itself is a specialty. I've got the Joseph Agris' book "Transportation Issue Plate Numbering Coil Stamps" and figured that pretty much covered PNC's. Will do the PNC3 site now in hopes of finding more info on Transpo's. Thx again sir! |

Hey Peter! When are you going to put together an digital exhibit of your Transportation coils and get it published on Stamp Smarter? Or, if you are up for it, I can establish an online database which you could populate! Don |

Peter - talk about amusing, the PNC3 site has purged all of "The Plate Number" files, probably in the interest of space -however- something nagged at my noodle & I started searching my HD for PDFs and located a folder where I'd DL'd them 1½ years ago (unknown if I got them all but...), so now I've another great resource & lots of reading to do. Coupled with the my Agris book, Linn's Yearbook set 1983-2006, 2014 Scott US Spec, this site, Stamp Smarter & Google, I should be on the right research track. 2018 may be a most adventurous year! Thx again for rattling my noggin, good things floated to the top! |

Grandpa - I have all of the back issues of TPN (Feb 86 - Nov 95) and the PNC3 Coil Line (May 88 - Dec 2017) as well and they are a great resource. I design and print my own pages for my PNC collection (and regular US collection as well) if you'd like templates or info. I also recommend The Plate Number Coil Catalog by Richard J. Nazar and the PNC Study Group, it dates to 1995 but is an amazing reference book.
Peter, I second (and third) the idea of a digital exhibit of your Trans coils. My transportation coils collection only spans 5 albums, so it would be great to see scans of all the varieties. |

@John, for "The Plate Number" issues go to http://pnc3.org and choose the "reference" button. Go down for a bit and choose the "The Plate Number" button. I just checked and they are all still there! As far as a digital exhibit - I will have to see. I am an old fool and not very good with computers. But I will contact Don about it, Peter |

Peter & Walkman - what sort of things do the both of you look for as it relates to Transpo coil varieties or oddities if you will, not so much the published ones but the unpublished as well? Nothing like learning from the best! I'll be reading "The Plate Number" PDF issues I have and am hoping perhaps either/both of you can also guide me towards any other reference material that there is for this newbie Transpo coil flyspecking guy<G>. This is one of those times when Google wasn't of much help. |

GrandpaJohn, thank you for that compliment. I started off back in 1981 with collecting the regular thing everybody was looking at - plate strips of 3. Did not last long at all because I almost from the start went with "precancel gaps" and I saved those as much as I could as a PS5 or longer. In order to make my albums look a bit better I saved my regular strips also as a PS5 almost from the beginning. Back in those days there were oodles of folks selling plate number coils, especially varieties like plate cracks. Other areas of interest were ( and still are ) mis-perforations, mis-cuts, inperforates, different colors and so on. Later on tagging varieties were getting attention as well as guide lines and guide dots ( LOM's ). Paper types are also a source of different varieties. One of the things I am very keen about is Constant Mat Varieties ( CMV's ), the small printing varities that occur on the various overprints used to make the precancels. One can literally amass whole collections of those, especially on the 4.9 cent and the 8.3 cent stamps. John, if there is anything else you w.ant to ask, please do not hesitate. Best wishes for 2018,
Peter |

GrandpaJohn, I'm hardly the best but thank you. As for the Trans series, I don't do flyspecking (yet). I collect a used single, PS3 & PS5, imperf pairs, color and tagging varieties, rare die cuts, and FDCs of each. I haven't found a comprehensive listing of each and every flyspeck variety yet, so I'm holding out until I can find a good one. I also don't collect the misperfs or miscuts as they are not constant varieties. I do have some interest in die cut connectors and paper varieties, but haven't delved into those either. My PNC collection is currently 6 volumes, but I still haven't designed and printed pages for more than half of those that I have currently stored in stock books. Currently, I have pages for flags, transportation 1 & 2 (still need to do B press, 3, & 4), rate change, miscellaneous, some eagle & shield, and officials. If you have any questions, please send me a message and I'll answer if I can or refer you to others if I can't.
Thanks,
Scott |

OK experts, as I'm creating my basic Transpo Coil want list (from the 2018 Scott US Spec) I note there is a 2127c. It says in the listing "c. As "a," black (precancel) omitted", then in the writing below, it says "On No. 2127c, an albino impression of the precancel is present."
OK, so this is saying the precancel normally in black is not there. If so, how do you ID it, or is it something you can't really see and that no tagging is the key ID factor here? If I'm interpreting this correctly, a 2127c is really an untagged 2127 with no visible precancel - RIGHT???
Yeah, I'm confused, and I'm unable to locate a pic of a 2127c on the 'net so I can UNconfuse myself. Do any of you have one of these beasts out of curiosity? |
