If you have to look that hard and still cannot be sure of the numeral, usually it is better to pass. Just my friendly opinion. It is a constant challenge for cancel collectors looking for the rare ones. |

Nice stamp Rene. Yepp I can see '28'. However because the postmark is that faint and almost unreadable, it is not very attractive for postmark collectors, hence the rarity factor of the postmark should in my opinion not affect the asking price much. It would still be cool to get such a rare postmark |

Thanks all and Jon included ! - I used all my software programs to get the number and was not impressed- but this dealer is # 1 in Canada ( ebay) so we shall see - a nice cancellation is probably worth 2-3X the estimated auction price. I agree. One other item is the value of this # 1 New Brunswick - Unitrade puts it at $350 for a used Fine, $700 for a VF - This is an imperf stamp - This sellor never sold me "scrap" and it is refundable. I will let you know next week and Thanks again ! Rene |

Here is a St. George #28 cancel on cover paying the 15 cent / 9d treaty rate to California. One of three recorded covers paying the 9d rate with pence issue stamps. |

Blaamand - the letter was initially addressed to Garrote [later known as Groveland] California. When the letter got to Garrote, the addressee, probably a gold miner, had moved to Sonora, California. The 3 cent stamp paid the US postage to forward the letter from Garrote to Sonora. |

Happy to say I won my New Brunswick # 1 stamp, "28" numeral cancel of St George, N.B. 1854 RF 8 Will put a better scan when it arrives in 4-5 days from B.C. expedited-registered mail delivery - from DeveneyStamps - an auction house on ebay I trust for the past year or so. Bought my Bluenose from them. For the International members, New Brunswick is a Province of Canada and joined the Confederation in 1867. Therefore, this Pence issue was under the British at the time. 3 stamps with "pence" values were in existence at the time, prior to the introduction of decimal issues. Numerical cancels were used and numbered at the time of Pence issues as well as others. Very complicated History but more than 400,000 "3 pence" stamps were printed according to The Postal History of Nova Scotia and Neew Brunswick 1754-1867, by Jephcott, Greene and Young (1964 publishing) |
