I really need a #1 because I don't want to throw away the 1st page in my album :-)
I've seen this one, listed as a 1a, in the $225 range.
Any advice? Is it worth it? Obviously, the bottom margin is missing; otherwise, it seems solid. No cert.
 <poor scan; not mine>
Thanks for your advice, Kirk

If I had the money ( without my wife knowing about it ) I would seriously consider it. I like the blue cancel also!

If you look at ebay completed auctions you can get a feel for what they are selling for. Three margin copies can be bought for between $135-$250. Around $225, for margin copies can be found. The blue cancel is nice, I wish it didn't go through franklin's eyes. |

You can purchase very nice four margin examples with certificates all of the time from auction house like Siegel for $200 to $250. |

Kirk, assuming it's sound, it seems fairly-priced (retail) to me, although I'd be very suspicious of the Scott 1a identification. It doesn't look it to me. |

I saw a #1 on cover and a #1b at Apfelbaum yesterday. Not that I trust their pricing or description, the pictures looked good and around the same price margin.
It is in my wishlist for 2018 too. Happy hunting. |

Kirks,
I also like the darker color (not sure it will cert as a "1a") and the blue cancel but if I was only going to by 1 #1 I think there are better copies that come available for roughly the same amount and I would keep looking. Once you have it - that spot will be filled and you only want to fill it with one you are totally sold on.

The missing bottom margin probably explains the $225 range as my search on ebay of 4 pages of US Sc 1a yielded way higher prices. I am not a "connoisseur" of US # 1 - color would be darker with a good scan, I suppose. Good luck ! Rene |

Not sure why ebay is referenced as an accurate reflection of market price. ebay is overpriced consistently. Utilize Siegel Powersearch for real prices for quality stamps with certs. For 250-275 dollars with commission you will do nicely. It does not need to be Siegel either. Harmer, Cherrystone and others will be about the same. I will never understand the ebay obsession. You get less for more. Just my opinion though. Good luck either way. |

Its difficult to tell from scan above, but the prominent/deep details of engraving and brown color suggest this stamp may be from the earlier delivery/1st ? Hard to tell if a red brown, brown or dark brown based on scan. I favor brown.
These earlier delivery stamps generally sell for a little higher especially when get up to and above sound VF-XF centering, although this stamp misses the mark from centering standpoint. Regardless I prefer Scott #1 to have this deep impression versus some of the later boring stamps that are just worn/dull red brown.
