I have a few of these cancels in my Austria collection. These stamps are Scott 1465 and 965, respectively.

Are these cancels known by any term other than "mute cancels"? I'm creating some custom pages for them, and want to get the terminology correct.

Thanks, Robert

I don't know what's the best name for them but here's a very good article where the author just calls them "dumb cancels":

Great link, Nigel.

From a query of mine previously.

You may also encounter, another Postmark that did the same job, (c1938) "W1"

Is it possible that this type of 'obliteration' was used for bulk mailing or are they a type of 'precancel'?

Hu Bujutsu,

The link I gave gives a good background on these.

Theses are typically arrival marks for stamps that hadn't been cancelled.

Some were used in the same way at transit offices and in the early days some were even used at the original office alongside another handstamp.

The basic purpose was to give stamps a clear cancellation without confusing the recipient as to the date or place of posting.
