I thought some of you may be interested in thi envelope I found in a stamp lot my hubby won for me on ebay.

It was mailed from the Queen Mary on her maiden voyage. It is postmarked 1936.

Hmmm. This is a good example of two "different" types of covers for this.

I'm torn. I like the first one because it's "down home" and it's something I'd expect to find in a box of letters.

The second is obviously cool because of the ship motif. In all honesty, I don't like the fact that the address is done with a typewriter. It's just me.

Once again, this is what is SO COOL about stamps. There is history and a whole lot of other stuff. I collect baseball cards, but there is really nothing to discuss unless there's an autograph, etc.

Because of this thread, I've googled Queen Mary and have managed to profitably spend almost an hour on a topic I didn't even know existed when I left work today!

Nice Cover Tom

Mine isn't actually a cover but an ordanary envelope someone mailed from the Queen Mary. It has a note inside as well.

Dianne....

I like both covers equally for different reasons. Obviously I bought my cover because of the great graphics....and my Hindenberg covers are from the same month. (I'll post photos soon) (I also have a postcard with a similar image) Your cover (and it is a cover) is actually a better item when thinking about postal history. Something that became what it is simply by everyday use of the postal system. And, you have a letter ?? Wonderful !!

Thanks Tom

You've enlightened me once again.

I guess I'll have to read up on the deffinition of a cover. I may have more than I realize.

I love history and geography and I think that is why I love this hobby as much as I do

Dianne....

A cover is an envelope.....to a collector, to non-collectors they're just envelopes.

Re-opening a much older thread, but I was scanning this item for another project, and thought to post it here. My grandmother had lots of friends. This one was on the Maiden Voyage and mailed this item. I love the letter describing the "fierce vibration".

(Note: I may have posted earlier, but can't find it now. Sorry, in advance, for the duplication.)
