Hi all

I just picked up this cover ultra cheap... $1.00! I happened to spot the US Official Seal, then noticed it hasn't been torn/cut in half. I don't collect them exactly, but thought I'd liberate it from that Dollar Box.

Thoughts?

Not a rare item, but definitely a nice, tied to cover example which, as you pointed out, has not been mutilated in the opening of the envelope by the recipient. Definitely worth the dollar!

Doesn't matter, it makes a nice little addition to my collection!

Though.......... just why WAS it officially sealed, I wonder?

The wrinkling indicates that here was probably a heavy enclosure which tore the thin airmail envelope. The postal people in Massachusetts nicely repaired the tear for safe delivery.

What does the rubber stamp over the seal say, if I might ask?

Two very common reasons to use a seal would be: Damaged in handling or,
opened by mistake at an incorrect address - then remailed.
It appears yours has a very weak "Received in bad condition" marking which ties the seal - or words to that effect.

Hi Nells,

Official seals on covers are typically fairly routine-looking, but there are some very unusual examples to be found, if you search them out.

Shown below is an official seal used on the post office's own mail!

Jim

Note the same style of "line" after "at" on James' and my cover... coincidence?
