This time the cartel has resurrected "stampdeals" and is staining the late Ralph Orton's name with these phony stock cards.

I wonder if the day will come when ebay is held accountable for complicity in this ongoing fraud, since it is so frequent and prevalent.

I don't get it. What's the scam?

The scam likelihood is very high because this is a known cartel ID and the cartel regularly uses reproduction dealer cards from known but deceased stamp dealers to add a veneer of respectability to their lots. If any of these stamps were ever in this dealer's inventory it would be a coincidence along the lines of winning the lottery!

I'm familiar with cartel's fraudulent stamps, but, if these stamps are genuine, it seems like a waste of time to create fraudulent dealer's cards. Is the idea to get people to bid higher, because they believe (incorrectly) that the stamps were once in the inventory of a famous dealer?

"if these stamps are genuine" - the better stamps won't all be genuine or sound.
Mr. Ryle has been a great story teller on ebay for many years. Recently he has begun to selectively use this "dead dealer card" gambit to enhance his listings. Like the other elements of his MO (e.g. a few older PF certs in each lot that are clean or almost clean, some recent PF or PSE certs for some lower value items, etc.), it all goes together to help him give a potential buyer some false feeling of security and therefore increase the probability of a sale and the selling price.

Rhett - thank you for explaining more eloquently than I. It is a bit unsettling to see that - despite all the warnings posted on chatboards - it is likely a majority of readers aren't aware of the con.
