This is my first time with Great Britain and my 2005 Scott Classic images are poor so correlating with Stampworld images.

These appear to be Scott 79 but not sure. The second row appear to be a slightly different shade.

This is SG 166, 1d Venetian red, issued on 1 January 1880. There are shades, but SG doesn't separately identify them. The SG QV Specialised lists a couple of varieties, viz.: S joined to frame above, damage above this and spot after T; and line below G broken. Also listed with watermark inverted.

Thanks Geoff that's really helpful as I didn't know about the varieties and I have 41 of these - now off to check!

For the numeral postmarks, a handy free resource can be found here:

https://archive.org/details/cu31924030133536

The list starts at Appendix C, page 154.

For the London District postmark (SW17), here are some links:

The link to The Postal Cancellations of London 1840-1890 is at the bottom of this page:

Thanks, My eyes are shot today after going through several Vario pages. I had not even been aware of plating until I got into later issues. I assume there is some story about the control numbers in the corners.
