This one is listed in the Scott catalog and I believe I may have one. I have not been able to find an image of this which would either confirm or deny it, so here it is.

This is a very different shade of the $1.00 Eugene O'Neill stamp, Scott 1294, but is this the color listed as 1294b, the black violet color?

It is a MNH plate block, tagged. The plate block following it is a normal 1294, also tagged, for comparison.

While the two colors of your 1294 blocks are indeed different, I am not certain that the ink on the 2nd is dark enough. Will post a scan of a 1294b for comparison. One other note ... the 1294b shown below is NOT tagged. Scott makes no mention of the tagging on the black violet. So the question is when was 1294b printed. 1294a (tagged) was issued in 1973 while 1294 was issued in 1967. Maybe someone out there knows the answer.
Added: Searched for & found another thread about this stamp. One of the posts has a link to a Linn's article. Within the article, the author mentions that every known 1294b is untagged. Do a search on 1294b to find the other thread.

I had looked up the late numbers in Durland and 37565 was tagged.

Article in Linn's.

https://www.linns.com/news/us-stamp...s-stamp.html

"Sharman states in his report that, based on when the two known plates used to print the black violet stamps (32902 and 32903) were in use, "production of the stamp could not have occurred after February 21, 1974," the date that the BEP canceled plate 32903."

What criteria do the Scott folks use to asign a number to an obvious variation ?

As of late they have ignored most color variations unless it is a missing color, etc. There is just too many and where do you stop. It would balloon the catalogue.

They seem to use a different standard for classic stamps.
