I came across this interesting New South Wales forgery recently and thought I'd ask those who are interested specifically in forgeries if they think it could be a postally used contemporary forgery (1860s). It's on horizontally laid paper so it could even be on official stamp paper.

The NSW in 3 or 4 ovals was part of a Sydney duplex cancel and also a separate cancellation on its own. There are various types and were in use from 1858 to 1901.

Perf 12, yours looks like the type used between 1868 and 1871.

Jimjamtwo, the cancellation has been forged also.

Hope this info helps

Thanks for the info.

Is there any record of this particular forgery before? It's odd because it doesn't get the colours right, let alone the design.

Mavis Pope wrote the book on NSW forgeries. I've borrowed it on an inter-library loan. Ask your library to try to get the 2nd edition if they can.

At a guess I'd say yours is a Spiro forgery. They're usually pretty bad!
