The following is the stamp in question - front, back and back highly processed to bring out the watermark.

The first question: Can whether anyone can identify which of the two Crown over NSW watermarks this is? The possibilities are:

I suspect this comes from the 1982-97 issue as a previous owner has written 233 on the back, i.e. in the area of the 5d green of this issue.

The perf measures 11.00 by 11.75 so this points to SG 233d

The kicker, however is that the Watermark is inverted. I can see no instances of an inverted Watermark in SG, just a few "Watermark sideways" entries. Also, I can see no incidental notes about inverted watermarks.

Can anyone help me pin down the ID for this stamp?

Hi Itma,

Yes the stamp is SG233d, watermark 40.

As for the inverted watermark, there is a note at the beginning of the listings for Australia that covers this point.

I too have one that has an inverted watermark. It's watermark 40 much clearer crown than yours but I'd say yours is 40 as well.

Probably Federal issue 1903-1912 single line perf 11x12 ACSC N33. All Federal issues had watermark inverted but this is not mentioned in SG. Watermark is probably W65 SG329.

Regards
Frank

Bobby:

Thanks. I looked through the listings round this time but didn't look for a more general note at the very beginning.

Frank:

I don't think it is Wmk W65 as the spacing in between the Crown and NSW is very much smaller, compared to W40 - particularly when considering that the perf comes between them.

Another Frank.

The proximity of the base of the crown to the NSW lettering protruding down from the top of the stamp looks likely to be watermark 65.

Measure the distance to be sure - 2mm gap for watermark 40 or 1mm gap for watermark 65.
