I just found the book "Paper Chase" by Alvin F. Harlow which seems to have many nice stories about stamps. Does anybody know it? I would like to know if it also has some stories and background about the stamp production (perforation, grill, paper)? In any case it seems like worth have a look into it. (I know there are preview online, but from the chapter titles I don't know more)

the other book which I will perhaps get once could be "United States grills" by William L. Stevenson (1920). Is this interesting still today, and are there also informations about the production of grills?

and the third book I want to mention here is the "Color in Philately" by Roy White. As most of us never will own his Encyclopedia, I would like to ask if this book could be like a "light" version, so are there also some color samples in this book?

'Paper Chase'is a great read. Anyone who enjoyed Herman Herst's 'Nassau Street' will like it. It doesn't seem to focus much on technical philately, just a lot of stories- and scandals- from the period just prior to that covered by Herst. It is not as easy to read as Nassau Street but very rewarding. If you like accounts of the early days in stamp dealing, get it. I found my copy on ebay, a reprint for $15 or so.

"Color in Philately" is a more scientific approach to the color subject by Roy White than his multi-volume set on the colors and papers of specific U. S. classic stamps. In this 175 page book, which was published in 1979 by the Philatelic Foundation in NYC, White advocates for universal use of the Munsell system of color identification for stamps and puts forth the reasons why he came to that opinion. There are some Munsell color charts included with the work and there is a section of color studies of specific U. S. classic (and some foreign) stamps. An interesting read for the scientific-oriented mind, but not a "light" or "mini" version of his multi-volume set at all.

Most color standard manufacturers (i.e. Pantone) recommend replacing printed color samples every few years. Just like stamps, ink pigments in the color samples change over time.

I will second the observation that the White book is very terse reading, and not for the faint of heart.

If you are really really into scientific analysis of color, then by all means go for it, but if you are just looking for color comparisons like his other publication ... I would suggest that this isn't the best choice for that.

thank you again. yes, I hoped that perhaps he would have put some of the classic stamps into this book as examples which cause the main problems for color definition, like 3c 1851, 3c 1861 and 24c 1861. I already had asked some questions about the White color charts some time ago.... and as they are still the only one to exist, it's ok if they are 35 years old, they still give an indication (it's all about how and where you store it, same with all my Pantone charts).

Still I think it would a great idea to put the White Encyclopedia as a (color-managed) PDF on Stampmarter one day... (or some scans of the above mentioned candidates), if anybody has found the owner of the rights of use.
