For personal research and education purposes, I need copies of papers by R. Gratton in two issues of Canadian Philatelist - Vol 63, #3 (May-Jun 2012), and #4 (Jul-Aug 2012). They are not available in any philatelic library in the US, based on the Union Catalog. If you can supply a scan or copy, please send a message via SCF.
I am aware these articles are in French.
This matter relates to expertizing a purported Canadian laid paper rarity that an estate has asked my local club to sell. Applying the Denman Doctrine, I am assuming it is NOT a rarity, and am looking for evidence in the literature to disprove that thesis. These articles are an essential starting point and if I can obtain them, I will provide a full report here, after completion.
thanks, Chris

Thanks, I will contact Greene.
The stamp purports to be Scott 31, but I believe it is an altered Scott 22. The deceased collector had the means to acquire a 31, but I am still presuming it is not. I prefer not to post images or other information until this study is complete and a Greene cert is in hand, and then I expect the substance to be "how I proved it was not a 31". |

I'd be interested in the details too. If I am lucky, I might even see the stamp in person. As the #31 is a tempting target, all bear close inspection. Some fakes are incredibly good and evade detection for years. I was "overruled" recently on one, and am burned about it as I'm still sure my call was right, |

Quote: p.s. the VGGF very likely has English translations of the articles as you will find out. If an article in Canadian Philatelist is published in French only, there may not necessarily be an English translation. I've contacted them in the past for a translation and was told that it's often not in the budget, so if an article is printed only in French, that's probably the reason why. I think they print bilingually when they can, but it's not always possible. |

I agree with you James. Budget certainly has a role to play. Same applies to english only articles. They are not often available in french. Despite this, the Canadian Philatelist remains a top publication for Canadian philately, and worth every penny for my subscription. |

Read the report thanks. Seems a reasonable conclusion based on what I see. I didn't need a translator for the Gratton articles but had them in English somewhere. |

The only issue I have with the report, is that the pen cancel has been removed, and it has been regummed. If it was a real Canada 31 with laid paper, it could stand alone without the alterations. Anyone buying a real copy would go through the task of getting it certified on its original state. Still seems fishy to me. |

A mint copy catalogs at 3X the value of a used copy, so I am presuming that someone wanted to make a used copy look like mint to achieve the far higher value. With the value difference in the tens of thousands of dollars, and the pen cancel relatively small, this could have been a powerful temptation. |
