It's not very often you will see something like this...

an unopened 1/18th lb pouch of "Big Value 5¢ Cigarette Tobacco" from 1917. I can't tell for sure if it is a Ryan RP807 or RP808 but am leaning to Ryan RP808

Very cool, but going to be difficult to mount in an album.
I'd lean toward RP807. I think I'm seeing roulette perfs on your second photo along the top of the stamp (though it's along the bottom of the stamp image because it's upside-down).

Thanks! It is roulette. Possible 806 as well as I have heard from a expert who suggests that the numbers are violet but the dirt is concealing the right color. If anyone is interested in the results, please let me know and I will update.
Thanks!
Steve

Yes, I was wondering about the colour of the serial number, but figured age and dirt had changed it some. Almost all the printing in your photos looks blue, on my monitor anyway.

Nice collectible...To me the colour of the printing is what I would call a dirty violet of very dark violet...But definitely in the violet colour range.

Hi Werth. It's actually color of the serial numbers that identify it.

Ut oh, going to rain on this parade... Analyzing a color in an image is not the same as analyzing a stamp color.

For am image color to match the actual stamp color;
- the original image would have to be an uncompressed .TIFF file (cannot be saved using .JPG or some other compressed file format)
- the original image would have to be scanned (not photographed under ambient lighting condition)
- the original image would have to scanned using a calibrated scanner and scanned driver

..But it is the best we can do with what we have.

Robert

A better idea is maybe not scan at 1200 dpi, rather 600 dpi so when you have to post it you will not have so much compression...Less lose of colour..Does that make sense.?
