Here's a different kind of postal history query:
I have been researching the two Post Offices that were in operation at City Point, Virginia during the U.S. Civil War. City Point was General Grant's headquarters during the Petersburg campaign in 1864 and 1865. President Lincoln visited City Point on more than one occasion during this period.
The first Post Office at City Point was destroyed as a result of a confederate saboteur's time bomb and subsequent munitions barge explosion on August 9, 1864. The second post office was built "up the hill" from the first almost immediately afterward for the benefit of the troops. Both of these post offices were Army Post Offices.
Here's the tough part: I am looking for a bona-fide image of the front of either or both of these Army Post Offices at City Point while the town was occupied by Union Troops.
I have seen the image entitled "Post office, City Point" at the Library of Congress website
http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/ppmsca.08251/ and I believe that image is
incorrectly titled. The buildings shown are actually the Provost Marshall's and Quartermaster's offices.
My hope is there are some history buffs who are interested in early post offices of this era who can provide some help, comments, suggestions, information, or images.
Any help or suggestions will be deeply appreciated.
