Back in the day collecting "on document" was not popular, so most higher values got soaked off. That's why most first, second, and third issues above $1 are tough to find, and some are nearly impossible.
Yeah, the 2nd and 3rd issue high denoms on document are a beyotch. Not easy.
Mike Morrissey had a huge exhibit of 2nd and 3rd issues, including documents, plate varieties, cancels, etc. Sold to Richard Friedberg. The first show after the acquisition (Chicagopex 2013) there was a feeding frenzy. I remember spending hours at Richard's booth, me at one end, and Tim Wait at the other end, passing exhibit sheets back and forth. Tim was focused on documents, and I was focused on cancels, so there was little conflict over acquisitions.
In retrospect, I wish I had picked up a few more on-document examples instead of just cancels.
I think that some of the material is still in Richard's inventory, so you might give him a buzz. Don't expect it to be cheap though.
I've shown these here a year or 2 ago. There are some high value stamps I'd like to get so some sacrifices are evident and I was thinking of possibly using a couple of these to generate the funds but can't find comparable items to see if there even is a market value.
