It's a constant process, after all most stamp collector's are old like me and estates become available all the time. IMO the best place to look is the Stamp Auction Network (SAN) which is a central hub for the many stamp auctions. You can often find small box lots containing 2 or 3 bankers boxes for a couple $100. If you become a collector it may suit you to buy a collection and expand it. SAN can be found at;

I recommend staring modestly and see if you like it.

Good luck!

Not as easy to do that as it used to be. Good large lots often bring real money.

Thanks. I inherited a rather large collection, and I am trying to make sense of it now--how to organize it, album vs envelopes, what to do with plate blocks... So many questions! And then I ran across this post about buying large lots. Sounds like a lot of fun and something I'd enjoy doing over time.

I think you can usually get interesting box lots at Dutch Country for a couple $100 and a beginner would have lots of fun. Lately there have been a lot of very large box lots, Rasdale always has big lots and now Kelliher too.

Today ,the auction starts .it will be interesting to see how the retail philatelic market handles this massive holding . The auction as large as it is will give a look into how strong both ebay stamp sellers and the retail bourse and stamp show business has changed since the big New York Show .
No one auction can explain all the changes that are happening in the stamp market place ,but this weekend will give you a good idea of market movement and what is going on . For those not fimilar with this auction , it will spotlight the collectible half of the market without the high end gems or the specialized items this is just the low end of a enjoyable hobby .

Scored two excellent condition Master Globals with slipcases for $300. The stamps in them are a bonus. Time to finally place the 50,000 plus WW stamps that I have in 102 cards in albums. Going to be a very constructive and fun Summer.

I got 2 out of the 3 I wanted. I got blown away on 1st, got the 2nd for $2000 under my max and got the 3rd for $2000 over my max, so I'm happy.

The huge lots sold pretty well, but how can you tell what they were worth?

I am very curious about how much material was acquired by NYStamps and the like. It should be hitting ebay in short order.

Rogdcam ----I know Jimmy [the owner of N.Y.Stamps} and watched him bid for many years at various auctions . I even got yelled at by the girl who now handles his bidding at the auctions . I cost him quite a bit of money over the years and figured out his buying patterns and in turn they P.O. me a few times and cost me higher prices .

They buy so much material at each auction that I am now sure he is buying for someone overseas and / selling it thru a fake wall so nobody can track his buying to his selling .He is buying over a million dollars each year for over 20 years and his numbers on ebay at not close to those numbers ,so its going somewhere ?

Auction is over and the prices show a strong support to the over all collecting market .I missed out on a lot of stuff because what I did win I paid a higher price and the many things I lost was because my top bid wasn't even close to the final price .
