No, you don't need to soak. Especially with mint stamps. That will destroy the gum. The lighter fluid should evaporate in a few minutes.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

Thanks Dan. I'll have a go probably over Easter weekend next week and let you know how I get on.

philh2004,

I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress. Learning how to watermark is a fundamental skill for collectors. Sometimes it's the only way to tell stamps apart.

Some advanced collectors even make distinctions between the direction of the watermark, horizontal or vertical, and if the watermark is right side up or inverted. Sometimes the length of the watermark is used as well.

I'm now armed and dangerous with some Swan lighter fluid! Just need to find a small black tray to use now.

Out of interest do you collect any other areas of Germany?

Have fun with your adventure. You'll be an expert in no time!

I've spent the last few years concentrating on Soviet Occupied Germany MiNr. 1 - 241 (paper, gum and watermark variations). I have DDR MiNr. 242 - Dienstmarken E in "postfrisch" condition.

I also collect Germany from Imperial Germany (1872) to unification in 1990 so I have a lot more fun ahead of me!

You can use the back side of a dealer 102 card, it only takes a few drops of fluid for most stamps.
