This is from the current Siegel auction. It's listed as all unwatermarked stamps. Is there a good reason to believe that? Does the postmark narrow down the dates when this was mailed?

Hopefully, someone with some knowledge has examined this before putting it in the sale. This is something that has to be examined in person.

The postmark is not really going to help date this.

Is this a parcel post cancellation?

Yes it is a registry cancel. And there are people with enough knowledge to differentiate between those without watermarks and those that have them by the look of the perforations. I don't know whether that is what was done here.

Thanks all for the comments. I doubted the cancels would work, but it's not my area. Interesting that one might be able to tell by the perfs. I'm not doubting Siegel - I think of them as very careful and accurate - just wondering how one can know. I find myself attracted to pieces like this - combinations of classic stamps on a single piece - and first bureaus are a particular interest of mine.

The type can be seen used on third class mail but is a general purpose killer. It's also found on registered mail (front of cover) and 2nd class (magazines, newspapers).

Anybody know if $1.73 can be figured as a rate for something?

If you could view this at an extreme flat angle to a light source, a watermark could be made visible assuming a very smooth surface. Sometimes watermark fluid works for stamps on piece, but this looks like paper reinforced with threads, fairly thick stuff. Of course, sometimes watermarked/unwatermarked stamps are hard to reconcile with this issue, even in fluid.

This is a general purpose canceler. The "P" indicates that the item was mailed from New York Station P.

As noted in a previous post it is commonly seen on both parcels and registered letter mail. This piece has all the appearances of being on a parcel.

Where can I find more information on the difference of the appearance of the perforations?
I have a tough time with the watermarks on those stamps.
