I was checking some of the older control markings in our collection and noticed that I could make words from them!

Amazing the different ways you can look at stamps.

I have always been interested in the printing processes of stamps, (not understanding a lot of the terms, but still...) and they make an interesting thematic study, see this page on our website.

-/markis.html

Looking further at those, led to another theme we have of stamps issued from Queen Victoria's Jubilee, to Queen Elizabeth's 60th Jubilee, and feel that these are some of the best designed British stamps.

-/jubilee.html

The world's first adhesive postage stamp was issued in 1840, during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). During this time she celebrated a Golden Jubilee in 1887 and a Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Her son King Edward VII reigned only for 9 years, but his son King George V was the next monarch to celebrate a Jubilee, in 1935. The next two kings did not make it, Edward VIII only lasting for less than a year before he abdicated in favour of his younger brother, who became George VI. He died in 1952, having celebrated 25 years of marriage, (Silver Wedding in 1948), but only 11 years as King. Our present Queen has so far celebrated Jubilees for 25 years, 50 years and in 2012 an amazing 60 years. She has now been Queen for longer than her great-great-grandmother, Victoria.

There are heaps of other philatelic items on our non-commercial, advert free web site, starting with about 150 old letters (1660 onwards) with scans, information and with some really fascinating transcriptions. Other postal history of G.B., King Edward VIII, Australian stamp booklets, Antarctica etc. Why not have a browse?

Cheers to all.
Ron and Eunice.

Would love to see your penguin photo in a larger size. Checked out your web site and was impressed with your content - - - so wide ranging and historical.

for looking and for the nice compliments about our website. In response to Don our photo of the penguins. This is a photo by Frank Hurley from his book of Antarctic photographs 1910-1916 which included his work from the Scott, Mawson and Shackleton Expeditions.
We attach a larger image to show what a brilliant photo he took on the Mawson Expedition of 1911-13.

His caption under the photo is "Moulting Adélie penguins after a blizzard. Fresh snow does not necessarily fall during a blizzard – minute particles of old snow are picked up by the wind and it is these which form the blinding clouds of drift."
But for us the picture conjured up one penguin hiding behind a lump of ice and the others coming round the corner and seeing it in such a state, asking "WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?"
We have collected Antarctic stamps and covers for years, and accumulated different books about the early explorers and the expeditions.
Eunice is impressed that Rod has found that article from 2005 out of all those she wrote for Stamp News over 20 years.

Regards to all
Ron and Eunice.

Ron, Eunice

I'm sure you know of the Scott Polar Museum in Cambridge, which I had the pleasure of visiting a couple of months ago. If not, there are some lovely images available via the website

Thanks to all for so much feedback, it is great to be able to share these things.

Also glad to know that the web site is appreciated. It was a labour of love some years ago and we had to learn the HTML language to do it ourselves. We enjoy doing it.

Geoff - thanks for the link to the Scott Polar museum, we had a quick look but there is so much there we will have to make some further visits. How big is the museum, any idea?

Don - we feel the same about that image, a smile at every look. It reminds me of Peter Falk in It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world when the couple tried to crash their way out of a building and wrecked it and themselves in the process. Peter said "Eughh, what happened to you, was that an initiation ceremony or something?"

Cheers
Ron and Eunice

The real business of the institute is research, so the museum itself is small (and free). When I went, there was a permanent exhibition of artefacts etc together with a small temporary photographic exhibtion.

Can anyone verify that the image of the penguin is one that froze to death? If you do an online search on 'penguin frozen to death' this image does show up, but I have not yet seen any verification that this is indeed the case. For example, http://www.popfi.com/2010/06/14/the...-hypothermi/
