They look different and no grills. I think they are 75 and 76. But which is which?

I would guess 75 on the right & 76 on the left. But wait for one of the experts to chime in. |

Besides the colors, any other way to differentiate? Could they be just different shades? |

Color is the only way that I know to id these. While there are different shades, only 75 supposedly has red in it. Which is why I think the stamp on the right is 75. No red in the other stamp marks it as 76. That & the lack of a grill. Added: The third stamp appears to be between the other two color-wise. Still likely a 76 ... I think ... not as certain as the first one. |

@JLLebbert I agree that the first brown is pretty easy to identify as 76. But the other two are not. |

Colors are notoriously hard to definitively identify over screens or monitors. That being said, I agree that the right stamp of the first pair looks like #75 to me; the other 2 look like different shades of #76. I think unless a red shade (tint? hue? crap, I can't keep the right jargon for colors straight) is a dominate feature in the color, it can't be #75. |

75s and 76s are easy to spot, even from a black and white photo.
Look at the 75 (On the right) and the 76 (On the left).
Notice how the scrollwork around the portrait of Jefferson is crisp and crystal clear on the 76 and yet rather mushy on the 75?
That is how you can tell them. |

Scott75 is 5c red brown, Scott 76a is 5c black brown, and Scott 76 is 5c brown |

@billw2 thanks. Are you looking at the inner scrollwork or the outer one? Can you point out in an image? Thanks! And what is your opinion on the 3rd stamp? |

This one came up several years back, and Bill Weiss have the exact same explanation that BillW just did. But, it really helped to have the B&W suggestion added...thanks Bill |

So I have these two stamps. The first I have assigned as #75 and the second as #76. However, the above posts indicate that scroll work on the 75 is supposed to be more "fuzzy" than the 76. The one on the left still looks clear, but it is not at clear as the one on the right. Thoughts? |

You can really see the blurriness and sharpness in the background around Jefferson's head. From what I can remember, IIRC, the 75 has more ink, and therefore not as sharp as the 76. Hope this helps, Ray |

Here's an uncompressed 1200 dpi of just the parts above the head. The one on the left is much more blurry and definitely looks like more ink. So, I'm gonna stick with the #75 assignment that I had. |
