Interesting back-story. Very sad.

I know that there has been considerable debate over numerous covers bearing the "TITANIC" frank. I believe there is some question on them, as to whether they were ever posted on the ship, but instead, were postmarked prior to departure, and instead sent on some other ship.

It is interesting to see this one, which pretty clearly made the voyage.

I never heard about this before.
It is sad how this was recovered.
I know there is a lot of interest in the Titanic.
Thanks for sharing.

The National Postal Museum also has one in their collection:

It was shown as part of the "Fire and Ice" exhibit (Hindenburg and Titanic)

I guess one can infer that he had at least 9 bundles of mail destined for the NYC PO. The one for sale at the start of this thread is penciled '8', while the NPM one is penciled '9'. Presumably, that's a bundle number from the same PO.

The numbers could also have been the number of letters in the bundle.

Other facing strips have sold in the past. Some have similar numbers:

Yes, you are clearly correct. That does seem pretty clear upon looking at it again.
