I purchased this stamp on ebay and the seller said it was Scott 136 with a H grill. I can't seem to find the H. Thanks for the help.

It is hard to see, if you scan the back while wet with watermark fluid we might be better able to help. Don |

Thanks, Don. Now I see it. This is my first grill stamp and I love it even if it is off centered. |

do we now here have two nice examples of H grills showing the different states quite well? My guess would be: Cul_Lector early state, redwoodrandy late state.
Or is the H grill more often incomplete because several sheets of paper were grilled at once? (which would lead to the question if and which grill types are also often incomplete and why) |

another way to spot lightly grilled used stamps is to take a scrap sheet of paper and rub a no.2 pencil over a spot several times, then rub your finger over the penciling and then lightly rub the back of the stamp area in question. if present the grill ridges will show clearly. |

It does however leave graphite on the back of the stamp. Another method is to use a bright LED light and shine across the grill, (at about 90*) the light will create shadows which are easily visible. |

phil, I brought up the graphite method because it was shown to me along time ago by a current member of a well known expert committee who still uses it among the other methods available. |

When done correctly the method leaves a minimal amount of graphite on a stamp.
