I want to do a detailed sturdy of colour on a couple issues of Canadian stamps. Does anyone know where a person might get access to a spectrophotometer with a small aperture?

Hi Consort

Welcome to the Forum. Where are you? I have access to a VSC6000 H/S at the Greene Foundation in Toronto. We are happy to make the machine available to serious researchers.

Thanks GPH. Sorry for the delayed response but I have been away for the last week or so. Can you tell me if the VGG machine allows you to capture a colour digitally, i.e. - Pantone #, RGB, Hexadecimal or similar? What is the smallest aperture that machine allows? I want to record digital colours of the Consort stamps and will need to focus on the small area between the words "Canada" and "Postage". Thanks for any help you can provide.
Cheers

Hi Consort

With the VSC6000 I can get down to a sample reading of about 0.01 mm. My aperture is a set diameter but by increasing the magnification of the object I can target a very small area.

The output is in the form of an RGB table plus a graph of the spectral reflectance in the range between 400nm and 900nm although anything above 750nm is not terribly useful (being in the infra red range).

Thanks GJP, that's much appreciated and exactly what I was hoping to hear. Not sure when I might get to Toronto next, but I'll reach out a few weeks beforehand and see about setting a time/day to access the VSC6000.

Renden - I didn't intend to imply that we all needed this type of equipment, but I want to do some research on a particular stamp (#16/17) and colour is an important aspect of that as it relates to printing orders. In short, I own two of the important historic Consort collections (Whitworth and Menich)and their POs don't match. A contemporary collector has also published on PO colours. In all cases, colour descriptions are narrative and subject to much interpretation. I'd like to digitize them in a way that is more exacting and, more importantly, replicable.

I would like to thank you for your explanation. Even is I do not see a usage (common) for this type of equipment, who am I to say it cannot bring important details to your query.
Thanks again and sorry for my "dumbness" !!
