1c 1857 Plate 5 Stamps

Very nice block. I could use that image for recreation of the right pane. I am working on the left pane currently.

If you want Siegel to make a better scan for you, you better hurry as they will be sending it out soon, clearly. Otherwise, you can just use what they already have.

Will you be able to break it up into positions, and upload to stamp smarter by position, like you did with the 1L right pane?

I also have to recognize Siegel Auctions, as they deserve a lot of credit for supporting the collecting community in this manner as well as many others.

I have separated, labeled and uploaded all 15 stamps to the database. I hope that the images will prove to be of use.

Kudos to Siegel for always helping the stamp collecting community and their willingness to go out of their way to accommodate someone's special requests for the benefit of the hobby.

53-54R5, nicely centered Type Va pair.

44-45R5. Somewhat weak along the center perfs, but still a nice Type Va pair showing plating marks clearly. New York straight-line PAID cancel.

I want to say that the New York PAID in black struck on a stamped cover is pretty unusual.

Normally these types of PAID markings, often along with a rate at the bottom -- which may or may not be present on yours -- are for foreign mail, and when pre-paid, are struck in red, reflecting a credit to a foreign country.

Black usually signifies unpaid, and, therefore, at least for foreign mail, does not have a PAID in it.

I did recently come across a black NY PAID with no rate (similar to yours) on a cover addressed domestically, of unknown origin. From memory, I want to say Chase or Ashbrook had stipulated that that cover probably originated in some foreign country and was deposited in the mail in the US, and the PAID applied to US domestic postage. That cover was franked with a single 3c 1857 stamp.

Yours may be a similar situation, with a domestic destination.

edit: To clarify, PAID in general for domestic usages is fine, and normal. I'm speaking specifically about this type and configuration of device used in NYC.

Here is a #24 Type 5a, position 64R5. This specimen shows lines in the top left side ornament that don't show in the Neinken book.

I'm considering putting this stamp up for sale on ebay. If anyone would like to make an offer, please do. the stamp was cancelled hard, leaving an impression in the paper, and it has some rough perf tips.

My 64R5, shown above, is currently up for sale on ebay.

Picked this up the other day on ebay on the outside chance it might be a type VA. The listing photo was not that great and I dodn't have enough time before the end of the listing to request a better photo.

The closest I can come to it is 59R5, and would appreciate input from you other 1c Franklin fans.
